Our Conductor - Rob Kinnear

Born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, Rob's first conducting opportunity came as he lead the school Jazz Band during his five years at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. Rob also performed on trombone with the St. Catharines Junior Symphony and Brass Ensemble with notable Canadian trumpeter, Stuart Laughton of the Canadian Brass and True North Brass.

While earning a Bachelor of Science at the University of Western Ontario, Rob performed in the University Jazz Band and the Mustang Marching Band while earning his B.M.A. at Windsor University. Rob performed in five operas and sang professionally with the Windsor Classic Chorale and the Michigan Opera Theatre for four years. He studied Choral conducting with James Tambourini. Rob also holds an Honours Specialist in Music from the University of Toronto.

Rob has participated in many community concert bands either as a performer or guest conductor including Brampton, Chingacousy, Encore, Fred Willet Concert Band, Guelph, South Simcoe, Port Colborne, St. Anne's, Lincoln and Welland, Welland Citizen's Band and Jack Solomon's Octoberfest Polka Band. Rob has also served the music community as an adjudicator for music festivals and the Canadian National Exhibition Rising Star Competition. As a member of the Canadian Band Association Executive, he was instrumental in resurrecting the historic CNE Festival of Bands Competition. He has conducted several community vocal Jazz ensembles, acted as musical director for community theatrical productions and directed Christian choral camps for over 25 years.

As well as conducting the Caledon Concert Band, Rob conducts the Choraliers Christian Male Chorus of Brampton and is Director of Music at Brampton Centennial Secondary School.

Known for instructing and inspiring players to perform beyond their usual level of technical ability, it has often been said that "Rob gets 110%" out of any group he conducts. Our conductor believes in making music accessible to everyone whether participating as a performer or a patron. He believes in continually raising the technical abilities of those he conducts. He does this by providing amateur players not only with exciting venues but also with opportunities to perform with and be mentored by professional musicians. To each rehearsal, Rob brings the benefits of a diverse musical background, a talent for helping players to visualize and communicate the composer's intent and a commitment to integrating players of differing levels of expertise.
